Help / Advice
Very cold weather and icy. Do not pour boiling water on the windscreen (tempting I know !) but you may crack it. HHandbrake: Not a bad idea but only on private land and with the car in gear , and on the level leave the handbrake off overnight to prevent it sticking on. On early cars with rear drum brakes driving off in the morning with the brake stuck may pull off a rear brake lining and lock a wheel!
Engine oil: Do not overfill all sorts of problems may arise and your diesel engine may not switch off (bet you can't work that one out)?
Tyres : Very important, the majority of vehicles we service have under inflated tyres, this will cost you in terms of m.p.g / roadholding and safety / tyre wear and general "feel" remember that 1 bar = 14.2 lbs therefore please don't read 2.4 as 24 It means 34 lbs. psi A BIG DIFFERENCE !!!!!
Buy a bottle of RAIN-X (in a yellow plastic container) from an accessory shop rub on the windscreen & windows once a month, see the rain run off ( who needs wipers ) !!
Engine Timing-belts often called Cam-belts: Many engines used to have timing-chains (they last a long time but can rattle) Now most engines have a rubber toothed belt to keep things in the right sequence, they can snap at a surprisingly low mileage, you will see lots of pound signs and your car old car could be "Written-off" !!! Does yours need renewal ?
Beware driving through "floods" on the road anything over 6 inches deep can do a lot of damage, hot "cats" don't like being plunged into cold water and may be expensive to replace. Worse still some vehicles have a low air-filter intake (stupid design) but suck water into the engine and you treasured transport could be a "write-off".
Watch your gauges, temp. oil pressure etc. (if you've got them). A RED light on the motor-way is often too late!
ABS-brakes, know how they feel in an emergency stop? the brake pedal judders when the brakes go on and off ,it can be alarming when first experienced but the brakes don't lock so you can still steer and may avoid the accident. Not all cars have anti-lock brakes so don't assume yours has. Most "shunts" can be avoided by steering if you haven't locked-up by braking too hard, even more important when it's wet!! Teach this to novice drivers.o novice drivers.
Save FUEL ! Put 2lbs more pressure in all your tyres, your car will roll more easily.
Young drivers, why not teach them all about tyre pressures, check the oil, check that all bulbs work, have the tyres still got tread on them? Keep windows and lights clean ( you see more!), get rid of all the rubbish in the car (ugh! those old trainers smell ). Put them on a skid-pan, lots of fun and it may help when horror strikes. Understeer, oversteer whats all that? New drivers should have a green P on the back and front, they may have passed a test but I bet they can't drive without being in the wrong lane often ( even with SAT NAV ) and giving other drivers a scare. Can they read a map ?a
